Supervision

SOAR is a research school. In addition to the focus on PhD students, SOAR also includes graduates, postdocs and supervisors in the activities and networks. This is important because they also constitute the research environment, in which the PhD student is under education. SOAR wants to contribute to the professional discussions with a special focus on the organic food and farming systems.

Supervision

Organic Agriculture

Organic agriculture has its own values, principles and regulations. The International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements IFOAM has agreed on the four principles of Health, Ecology, Fairness and Care as underlying principles for organic agriculture

SOAR stakeholder seminar

SOAR organises 1-2 annual seminars with topics related to the Ph.D.studies connected to SOAR, with focus on exchange and discussion of issues important to the students, and e.g. discussions on the values and principles of organic farming as the basis for research, and encourage a critical attitude to the practices, policies and research of organic farming. The seminars are open for Ph.D.students, post docs and supervisors. Participation in 4 seminars give the Ph.D.students 2 ECTS points. The spring seminar in 2011 will be held at 28th-29th March at Aarslev Kro close to Aarhus and has the title ‘Ethics and our research in organic agriculture, food and energy systems for a sustainable future’.

Target group: PhD students, supervisors and postdocs.

Time and place: Monday 28th March 2011 12am to Tuesday 29th March 2011 14pm at Helnan Årslev Hotel, Silkeborgvej 900, 8220 Brabrand, Denmark.

The theme of the seminar is Climate Change.

Autumn 2009

24-25 September 2009 at DJF Foulum, Aarhus University

Most scientists claim their research to be contributing to a sustainable development of the society, but it is not always easy to define in which way the research contributes. This is because sustainability is hard to define and addresses a complex set of issue. No single, ‘true’ definition of sustainability exists – what is implied depends on the proposer and on the assumptions, more or less, tacitly made. In which ways does your own research project contribute to development of sustainable agriculture/food production system?

You should end up with five keywords describing what YOU find is important for your research to contribute to sustainability. You should be able to explain to other group members what each key word covers.

To continue discussions on communication, Hans Henrik Dietz will give a presentation on loyalty: To whom do you owe your loyalty? To your supervisor? The university? Yourself? Should you communicate anything and everything? What ethics are in play here?

Hans Henrik Dietz is head of the Department for Small Animal Clinical Sciences at LIFE.

Friday's programme on career development.

The aim is to introduce tools and methods that will enable participants to clarify own competences and career goals beyond your PhD. We will discuss the competence demand on the danish academic laybour market. And we will look at ways of understanding and describing your personal competences.
